No mercy

I think the physicist was not punished appropriately. This young student attempted murder and was let off with only having to do probation. He should have been kicked out of school for such a crome. Society sometimes has double standards and because of who you are can play a huge role in how you are treated in life. I don't care if this student was a genius and had all the potential in the world, this puinisment was not fair. Robert Oppenheimer is the one of the world greatest scientist. He invented the Atomic Bomb used in World War II. He was the master minds of the entire project. As I think back if he had been kicked out of school, where would he had eneded up. When I found out who he was I still wouldn't have changed my mind on his punishment. He indeed did a great deed for this country by building the A bomb but he still can change his past. Even if he had been kicked out of school maybe that punishment could have shaped and groomed him into being a better man. Our society needs to stop punishing people based on race. It's sad to say that even now in 2011 our judicial systems is very rascists centered. Who is to say that this young man had perhaps been an African-American student. Do you think his punishment would have been the same or harsher. I think it would have been harsher with out a doubt.

In praise of the F word

"In praise of the F word", is a great little article. Sherry's Thesis for this article is that more teachers should start using the threat of flunking as a positive teaching method. I think Sherry did enough to acknowledge the other side of argument. She argued from a teachers point of view as well as from a parents point of view. She gave an example of when her son was a senior in high school and how his teacher used the method of threatening to flunk her son. The "F" word discussed in this essay means to flunk/fail.  Referring to this word as the "F" word increase the effectiveness of this essay. The effectiveness of this essay is increased because the F word sounds harsh and scary. This is used for fear to get the readers attention and for them to understand the importance of the message this word is supposed to bring. I think that Mary's audience is very wide. This article is centered and focused directly on the youth but probably the audience are majority adults.  I think the audience is receptive to the word. Sherry is qualified because she is a teacher and knows the struggles of teaching. Her way of thinking is most accurate. Using the "F" word should be a new method used by all teachers. If teachers started using this method then, I predict that more students would pay attention in class and do there work resulting in a lower rate failure rate. Stressing the "F" word will make students more aware of there goals in order to succeed and pass each year.

The Internet Good and Bad

Reasons why the internet is good
  1. Information
- Finding information from the internet is very useful. The internet is filled with websites that allows you to enhance your knowledge.
2.      2.Social Networking
-       -Social Networking is a useful way to communicate with friends and family. If a family member is overseas for possible military services, social networking with oovoo a webcam chat site, would be very useful to stay in touch. This website would allow you to physically see your love one daily.
3.     3. Entertainment
·         -Humans today devote so much time in finding ways to entertain themselves. The internet has so many sites available for entertainment. From online video gaming to online checkers the internet has it all. A lot of celebrity gossip can be seen online and some people get a kick out of celebrity drama.
4.     4. Online Education
·       - Online education has become new to most people. With technology moving rapidly courses are made available online for people to obtain a degree in a more reasonable time frame. For people with conflicts and can’t not physically attend a regular university, these online programs have made it possible for people to become educated.
5.  5. Online Employment
- The internet has provided people with employment opportunities. Working online can be more convenient.
Reasons why the internet is bad
1.      Causes Laziness
·         I am a testament to this statement, for example instead of looking up a word’s definition in a dictionary; I just hop on Google and Google the answer.
The internet has created an excuse for people to not research information in depth and just Google everything.
2.      Sites might not be reliable
·         Sometimes site you visit on the internet may have unreliable information and this is really bad when you are working on an assignment that requires credible information.
3.      Technical issues
·         Technical issues are another reasons why the internet is bad. Technical issues can be caused when thousands of people are trying to access the same site at the same time. Sometimes even GeorgiaView has technical issues making it hard to complete your assignments.

Oh the Joys of GSU

I can’t believe I have just completed a full week in college. I can honestly say this week has been the best week of my life. I have to be a little honest and say homesickness started to settle in a little bit this week. But I had to reassure myself of my purpose for being here and that Georgia Southern is the right place for me.
One of the many things I like about Georgia Southern are the multiple ways that a student can seek help for courses on campus. There are many organizations on campus that devotes most of their time to helping students be as successful as they can be. Also professors are willing to offer study sessions before exams, to insure students are equipped and ready. With these organizations set in place Georgia Southern is making sure that no one gets left behind and giving equal opportunities to all who seek extra help.
Speaking of leaving no one behind, I also like the transportation system. I am living off campus so the buses make it easier to commute from my apartment to my classes and other places on campus. Whenever I am on campus, the faithful blue route is always there to take me home. Also the buses run until nine so if I need to go back on campus I can.
Finishing this blog without talking about the awesome rac would be impossible. The rac is so amazing, and I spend a lot of time over there getting my work out on.  The rac is really fun and it’s a place where you can meet tons of new people. My favorite spot at the rac would have to be the pool. The pool is a nice way to relax from a long day of classes and a long day in the heat.
One thing that I strongly dislike is the extreme heat. I didn't know how hot it would be down here. As soon as you walk out your house in the morning, the heat hits you. Other than the climate I can truly say this is a great school.

They Don't Read

While reading Rob Weir's article, "They Don't Read," I fully agree with him. He stated that the reason college students don't read is because they never did. Rob's response, "they never did" is without a doubt a true statement. From my own experience in high school, when teachers assigned reading material most students opted out and this resulted in using spark notes over reading the material for themselves. If students didn't develop the concept of reading in high school, then there is no way that between the short months of summer that these same students, who are preparing for college, would develop this concept. Students enter college still trying to just get by without reading.

As a student, I know that being assigned a boring book from a professor isn't the most thrilling assignment. Rob Weir gives tips for professors to assign appropriate material that will engage their students. He insisted on feeding students small doses of material that they're use to seeing. If the professors are willing to pick better material, then students ought to do their part and try to read more. With technology moving more rapidly, students can be and are distracted with life’s social networking systems. From twitter to face book to online video gaming, our minds are constantly battling school work vs. socialization. This could be the very key why students aren't devoting more time to read.

My overall response to this article is students should be eager to read and learn everything the professor assigns since their parents are spending vast amounts of money for college. By reading this article, it has given me insight to become a better reader. If you look past the title of the book or the number of pages it has and try to focus only on the furtherance of your education then the concept of reading should become easier. Hopefully this will expand the student’s knowledge in his area of study. Furthermore, I believe that fewer encounters with twitter and face book will help students spend more time on their studies and actually read.  Hopefully in years to come, professor Rob Weir will write another article titled They Do Read a testament to “They Don't Read.”
